Grandma’s Quotes

“You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink”

“You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear”

These are the sort of things
my Grandma used to say
when I might be unhappy
on any given day

Some days when I had lost at love
and felt my life was over
she'd say, “there's always more than one
shamrock in a field of clover”

So dry your tears and rest your fears
and get up off that bed
pinch your cheeks and give a smile
there's nothing to be dread

“Tomorrow is another day”
another chance for growing
and guys get a real rush
to see a gal's complexion glowing

“A rolling stone gathers no moss”
so get yourself into action
knowing you are on the move
will give you satisfaction

So up I'd get and pinch my cheeks
and paste on a pretty smile
wear my best blouse and snappy skirt
and walk up town awhile

I’d think of all those things she said
her quotes for every occasion
and they would keep me on
the straight and narrow
without a lot of persuasion.

Today I want you to write the words to bring light into your own life or that of another. Whatever the struggle bring the verses to lift the spirit.

  1. I smiled as I read through your poem ... just today I sat with my almost seventeen year old grandson, held him in my arms, tried to erase the sadness he was feeling about his girlfriend who is going through a rough patch at home ... I think I might have used one of more of your grandma's quotes!!!

  2. Your grandmother was a wise woman, fortunately for you! I love the one about the shamrock, much nicer than "there's always more fish in the sea" which always sounded fishy to me.

  3. Oh nice to have a grandmother to share her wisdom with you. These quotes are so familiar. I have used one or two myself. Love the fact you shared her wisdom so beautifully through verse. Thank you so much for taking part in the challenge.

  4. She had it spot on. So glad that her sayings are still in your mind. A real legacy: and I think we do remember people most clearly by the things they said.

  5. I like the quotes from your grandmother, pearls of wisdom ~

Some days we need those words to compel us to rise and put a spring in our step ~
