Destiny

In a heartbeat life changes
clouds  roll in and showers fall
a child is struck by a car
someone wins a lottery
love appears, disappears,
we seem so lost
and found

In a heartbeat the world changes
Earthquakes come and leave their mark
rain forests die,
we weep
A new Pacific island rises from the sea
we walk together
seeing

In a heartbeat she changes
the good things become bad
then the bad things become good
She anticipates a warmer world
then finds it remains the same
again

In a heartbeat we are renewed
though issues remain the same
we accept
and like the phoenix
we rise again,
move forward,
meet our destiny
unarmed

  1. Such is life. ...and like your poem, we should wake to hope

  2. So very true the whole of existence as we know it is in continuous flux. What do we do? rise to each occasion with gratitude for each experience. Luv your metaphor of the phoenix added here.

    much love

  3. Indeed. Life is a collection of tiny events... that can have the biggest of effects.

    1. After rereading this poem, I must also say that the knowledge of/hope for that "heartbeat" is what keeps us fighting for tomorrow. We just never know when the change will come. But something tells us that it will...

  4. I hope that like the phoenix we can rise again however writers and poets are never unarmed while we are capable of saying what we think. What an excellent post in these times when our established order appears to have cracks in it and where little is being done for either mankind or the Earth's good.

  6. Oh, this is soo very beautifully poignant, Linda!❤️💖 My heart literally skipped a beat when I read this; "In a heartbeat we are renewed though issues remain the same we accept and like the phoenix we rise again, move forward, meet our destiny unarmed." 7. I like this Ellecee. I like the attitude, the meeting destiny unarmed, we accept-we rise again.

  8. This is nice, Linda. I often compare the humans in our world in a similar vein as ants, crawling around doing their thing, in a semi-dangerous and changing place. They get stepped on easily, get sprayed, eaten, etc. We have differing perils with similar results.
BTW, a few weeks ago we visited Pablo Neruda's (your intro header line) home in Valparaíso, Chile. He was wealthier than the average poet, similar to the US politicians after they get into office, they 'find' wealth.

  9. I like how you have strung these moments together, like beads on a necklace, to create a strong piece.
