Finali

The bush plane awaits
The tarmac is hot underfoot
I feel the heat through the
soles of my feet
A familiar scorch from
past lives
The breeze an insistent presence
a persistent touch
I’m excited
An adrenaline rush
reddens my cheeks
“There’s no turning back”
the commandant says
“Deaths are many,
reprieves are few.
What have you got to say?”
I walk toward infinity
I don’t look back
“Don’t give up”
I say
“Don’t give up.”

Going

I see the signs
every day
your favourite books
disappearing
Your soccer shoes
your skis
your winter coat
your signed photo
of  B. B. King
your vinyl
the beer mug you stole.
fromThe Nag’s Head
You think I don’t notice
such small things
mementos  of your life
Nothing of me
no match for you

Novel Union

What is love
if not
acceptance
of flaws that lovers
fail to see
Eyes clouded by
the carnal
and yet mindful
of the numberless
possibilities
We’re I not broken
you might not
have seen me
your nature being
to offer solace
to solve the puzzle
from the strewn pieces
that you see
This compassion
drew me in
holds me fast
within this novel union
palpable, constant,
and
enduring

Sit With Me

Free use

“See with your eyes! Listen with your ears! And if you wish to smell the fragrance, press for an explanation of every unresolved matter until your understanding is complete.“
Sen No Rikyu

Come
sit with me
let’s talk
I see how upset
you are
I sense
indifference
It seems only past
intimacies
hold us together
I know that
can’t be
true
I know you
I want to fix
this
This thing
This unresolved
thing
This bad seed
germinating
Let’s blow
our combined breath
upon it
as we would
cool our tea
Let this gulf
dissolve
as the steam rising
from our cups
Come
sit with me
let’s
talk

Affusion

Hot water
barely bearable
cascades over her body
secular affusion
washing away
negativity
perception willingly ascends
with the steam
her body releases itself
from angst, pity, doubt,
stoicism
embedded within
her zodiac sign
returns unfettered
tension disintegrates
leaving her world
momentarily
unscathed

On My Own

I am
a pitiful thing
mouth agape
begging
Crippled in
a crowded nest
heaped on rockery
Unable to move
on my own
It only looks like
the beginning
In truth
it is
the end

Thermals

Do thermals thrive
above the clouds?
To push me ever higher
that I might see the miracle
below me?
Mountain tops
crusted with snow
Ancient as the earth’s
beginning
Water towers of the world
without them the earth
would parch
A narrow window exists
as climate change threatens
sublimation
A calamity for humankind
but not mountains
Mountains in their majesty
defy extinction
Perhaps forever

Cabined

“but now I am cabined, cribbed, confined, bound in to saucy doubts and fears”

William Shakespeare - Macbeth

Today I graft with
words in homage to
the Bard
whose language lives
to this day and bears
truth to every happening

Now I  am cabined here alone
cribbed by a hovering virus
Confined with my own thoughts
how one cunning crazed maniac
could kill 22 without restraint
Our townsmen and guardians
fallen and gone
Incongruity abounds
Saucy doubts and fears
reign unfettered
during this
unearthly time

Decisions

(Free for personal and commercial use)

“You've got to jump off cliffs all the time and build your wings on the way down.”  ― Annie Dillard

She sits in awe
 contemplating her next move
overwhelmed by the beauty
surrounding her
she holds tight to the view
her body in stasis
Seeds of thoughts surfacing
decisions, decisions
there is only one way down
- dive -
Or stay forever
slowly becoming a minute particle
of this stunning crag
her precipice
her
choice

A Parable

 Ah, you have found me
Linger and listen
So few pass this way
and when they do
they don’t look up
and when they do
they don’t see
Wait, wait, I know you see
Linger and listen
Hearken to a parable
of me

I was a skilful hunter
ensconced in a tree blind,
a doe and her fawn
appearing below me
Although against many laws
secular and sacred
I took aim and shot
A great gust spun me ‘round
Momentarily mesmerized I
awaken
solidified
My head this bulbous bulb
My body to forever be
locked within this tree
Pity me

The Plan

He was the one
Handsome and entitled
he could have anyone
She would play hard to get
Not clutch his pant leg
as others were prone to do
Not flirt and flatter endlessly
She, the remote one,
would capture his delight
Her mystery would draw him in
Being elusive would beguile him
into her surreptitious snare
He was attentive and obliging
eager to relate
Then married someone else
a damsel in distress
a Cinderella type
She is salty with remorse
how could this be?
That yet again, for her,
“the best laid schemes
o’mice an’ men
gang aft agley”

Gift

I feel the night spirits beckon me
The crowns of trees form a canopy overhead,
high above me, hiding the stars
A frost settles over all
moss and stone alike
A sudden breeze caresses my face
as sensual as a lover’s touch
Night voices whisper
The dark is quivering with life
Despair lifts , rising upward in a mist
I am overwhelmed
An omen,
 a nocturnal gift

Delayed

Seasons are infinite
Each station on
the wheel of Nature
inviolable
Even as we mourn
spring initiates herself
with the coming of the green
Though she be late
she never fails
Does our memory fail us?
We still weep while waiting
though her warmth
will come!
Tomorrow

Tales out of School

(Perth, Western Australia)

She met him in the modern way
Through poetry via satellite
their passions grew
and dreams too

She immigrated to Australia
Following her heart towards
a union of bliss
A mistake this

Their intimacy knew no bounds
Until his misogyny crept in
Her feminism crept out
Unluckily at loggerheads
too much pain
to sustain

She fled back to her old life
No, not really the same
She gave up all thought of unions
Too much despair
Don’t go there!

The final folly of her heart
   brought relief
when all was said and done
From a fool’s paradise
to peace
at a price

Invisible

Where am I?
Buried under the lichen
on a rocky shore?
A cushion for your feet
as you contemplate
the ocean’s waves?

Perhaps a honey bee
in the roses you’ve carried
Whose  nectar I long
to taste
and my need to breath
within the roses
the scent of you

 More likely a pebble
thrown across
a glassy lake
You laughing as
it skips and slips
beneath the surface

Might I be a spirit?
Inhabiting your
golden retriever
Your stroke calming
my embittered heart

No
I’m invisible to you
No amount of metaphors
will make me real
No amount of tears will wash
indifference
away

Voices

 I lie awake as
voices disappear
into the ether
Not a breath remains
only the memory
A dreadful torrent
of creeping insects
insidiously advancing
across my cerebral plane
I rise to rediscover anger
The dead corpses of past affairs
alter the flow of ink
from my reluctant pen
impelling evanescent magic
to live on parchment
Disinclined
to fade away

Reflection

You were
frosted beer mugs
rocking chairs
a shaded porch
strong arms encircling
tender hands comforting
gathering cod from seines
beach fires
indiscriminate dancing
cool sheets, warm breath
laughter
midnight cigarettes
babes in arms
blue pills, dark rum
IV drips
held hands
tears
thunder storms, lightning strikes
post calm
ploughed earth
parsnips
dahlia, lupin
snow on the back field
pink dawn
joy
remorse
my life
our ballad
on and on
then
gone

So Be It

You play the clown
without joy or passion
you create this
tall, sullen, melancholic man
to stand between us
Words don’t reach you
as if a void exists
instead of this monster
you’ve created for
your own
pitiful
indulgence

Does your helmet deflect
my words as well?
Do you need armour
to approach me?

So be it
I walk away
and leave you
alone
with your
abject
 miseries
