A Message

  A message to her World

For K, who is her anchor

For P, her kindred spirit

For H, her brother

For T & J, her love children

For P, her lost one

For H, J, & O, her grandchildren

For S, O & F, their precious propagation

For L, who understands

For some left out

Dear world

She loves you

She accepts you as you are

in all of your disguises

in all your broken places

(as you in hers)

She will never leave you

voluntarily

or angrily

She needs you

Your fidelity

Your shelter

Your council

Your energy

Your gravity

Your wonder

Your joy

You are her multi faceted planet

Her home

30. Reverse engineer
What message would you like

to send the world. Write it down

and set it aside. Next, list the people

you’d like to receive it. Now, write

a poem that opens with the catalog

of recipients and brings your message

 back in at the end

Mac & Cheese

Plated memories

Macaroni and cheese

Who could imagine?

(Maybe a few)

Always on anniversaries,

birthdays, mood days,

and more

She baked it for the children

Her daughter begged the recipe

It was not like “ordinary”

Mac & cheese, she said

Now it’s her daughter who bakes

Better than her’s

Everything improves when

passed on

Who would have thought?

A recipe fuelled with love,

all these years

a cliche perhaps

No matter, with each serving

Memories come, new ones

are made

Nostalgia burns

Steal the Joy

Family

“Christ the Lord is
risen today”

 2000 year old myth?
Does that bring up
the hackles?
How dare she!
Does it bring about
a head shaking in
agreement?
Reactions (to me) irrelevant
to this day
 Borrow the joy
steal the spirit
Have you forgotten
your renewals,
your little deaths
your rebirths
The day of the proposal
The day of your child’s birth
Losing a parent
Births of grandchildren
Great-grandchildren
Life’s moments when
everything changed
Experience those
joys,
those tears
Steal the spirit
of this special
day

I Forget

How can I forget
the troubles borne,
and yet I do
The struggle of the Covid ill
their here and now
and yet I do
That caution should be foremost
in this addled mind,
and yet I do
My eyes see flowers everywhere,
my head is in my dreams
of future schemes,
My heart is with my family,
many far away,
I should not crave
pre Covid life
and yet I do

She

A L’Arora  (a poetry form)

(dedicated to Adeline)

She is old and can no longer deny
the passage of time
 having its affect
At night visitors stand
at the foot of her bed
She blinks to force them to fade

but gloating they remain
reprehensible and staid

She is blessed with a family who cares
Her daughters visit every week,
sons dutiful as well
Her sister wants to comfort,
without patronizing but
with a loving heart

all dreading this quickening
of the day they are to part

Then one day, a gift,
a son has ferreted to find
Poems dedicated to his mother
When she was only 17
A young woman on the brink of life
A friendship gay and fleeting

but to the young poet
a blessed aesthetic meeting

This book brought her unexpected joy
Seventy years have passed before
And yet this gift brings back
all her years, intertwining,
a mosaic – her life – a beautiful design
laid out before her, so strong

Restored from within
Nothing gone
