Poetic Justice

Good Universe Next Door

It was her engagement party

Not her first

She thought it had taken

a lot of courage to say

yes a second time

His and her friends were milling

about,  drinks and snacks in hand

The talking reminding her of

a cockatiel convention

Her girlfriend’s husband patted

her finance on the back saying,

loud enough for all to hear,

“Congrats man, wouldn’t be my

choice but I’ll bet she’ll be great once

you get past the used part”

There was a noticeable moment of quiet

She felt struck, overwhelmed,  ashamed,

angry,

What right had he to be so crude and in

front of all their friends too

Bastard

She touched his arm, smiled and

addressed the room in general,

“Don’t pay him any mind, he’s just jealous

‘cause he’s erectile dysfunctional,

Aren’t you honey”

The group broke out in raucous laughter,

Retaliation was hers

Why did she feel

so crummy?

6. Poetic Justice

 Start a poem with someone

 (maybe even you) saying the

wrong thing (maybe even a terrible

thing) and let the draft deliver some

kind of poetic justice… even if it’s

imaginary.

Let the poem carry intense emotion,

like rage or shame.

So Be It

You play the clown
without joy or passion
you create this
tall, sullen, melancholic man
to stand between us
Words don’t reach you
as if a void exists
instead of this monster
you’ve created for
your own
pitiful
indulgence

Does your helmet deflect
my words as well?
Do you need armour
to approach me?

So be it
I walk away
and leave you
alone
with your
abject
 miseries

Remnant

"One can live without having survived." Carolyn Forche

Supplicating among them
unobserved
wallowing on concrete
who will see her
anyone?

Hunger eats the heart out
thirst fogs the brain
life a remnant

Scorn drips from
a hundred feet
shod in ignorance

Apathetic to pain
she drifts out
and away

leaving them behind

For Solace

For solace
I stand before
this sculpture
and I see myself
mute
My eyes, nose and ears
blown away
ripped away
by you
and your demonic needs
unmet
Made to feel nothing
but inadequate
I survive
I will survive
I will speak
someday
for now I am
a muted mouth
your
remains

Today Karin has provided us with
some of her own very interesting photos to act
as a prompt for our poems.

WHO

Who?
Who?
Was it you?

I want to pound
the earth

I scream

Was it you?

What was it?

What did you do?

Cause doubt?
Steal a life?

Cause a fault
in the fabric
that is me?

An intense
secret
pleasure
for you

A loss
forever
for me.

Escape

There is nothing like a double vodka,

or a toke, or a pinch of coke,

to smooth out the jagged edge

To bring to mind the phantom friends

(again)

to make them mellow, all amends,

sins forgiven, every one

There is nothing like a double vodka,

or a toke, or a pinch of coke,

to make the scalpel keen

so that when it cuts her flesh

(again)

she never feels the wound
