Change

A Change is Gonna Come - written by Sam Cooke

A change is gonna come
Is it?
Really.

You’ve been seeing things
have you? That make you
believe so.
Show me, I want to know
Oh we’re all hoping
God only knows
But we tire of the politics,
sanguine metaphors, and no shows.
Language is changing, yes
it is,
Laws to tell you what to say,
not to say
Yes there is.
But there’s always been talking
Do you think new vocabulary
will change the vibe?
Have a look around
see any signs?
I want to see the changes
for the better
I really do
I’ve got babes in my family
the future matters to
Maybe they’ll be cause for change
God knows their trying
to make a difference in this crazy world
that’s all lopsided

You say a change is gonna come
Is it?
Really?

Inuendo

The pungent scent of
cherry blossoms
dissipates as she leaves
the park
She’s been reflecting
Innuendo has it that she
has lost again
The old refrain repeated
over and over
She could almost
feel nostalgic
“Unlucky at love”
“bitter and aging”
She smiles
Almost benevolent
toward gossips who
can’t perceive
her joys repeated
again and again
Because of her courage
to flow
and grow
and
let go

Crapshoot

“No one told her that so much of life
is spent being old”
Carol Shields - The Stone Diaries

What is “being old?
Name the criteria
Numbers?
70,80,90 years?
Being feeble?
She knows feeble teenagers
That is surely sad but
none the less true
Being confused?
Well we all know that one
Being set aside to your
place on the sofa?
Closer
Wisdom?
We wish
Bad knees?
What of injured athletes?
Dementia?
Too often
Illness?
Comes at any age
Shrinkage?
Usually
Wrinkles?
Sun lovers have those early on
Toothless?
 Maybe
Loneliness?
Possible
STOP ALREADY!!
Nobody knows for sure
So just keep on keeping on
when you’re old
you’ll know it
Trust the process
Don’t be waiting on it
Don’t count
Life?
It’s a crapshoot

one touch
I falter when I’m

Exhausted

Conundrum

“Crying is all right in its way while it lasts.
But you have to stop sooner or later, and
then you still have to decide what to do”

C S Lewis

She came on retreat to weep
For all lost causes
Hers and others
She hasn’t wept for years
She takes meds
to divert chaos
Problematic
 as all emotions
are equally
subdued
She could skip some
pills
This is a beautiful place
to let go
But then she might not
be able to drive home
and she might not
cry anyway

Morning Walk

We are taking our
morning walk early
We meet the homeless
being herded off the beach
and out of the park
before the tourists awake
We walk along the quay
past yachts that never leave
their berths - tourist attractions.
We sit on a bench at the
end of the wharf
A small respite
The sun has risen over the horizon
Creating a sky the colour of magnolias
The lake smooth as a pond
A pair of osprey are fishing
They float with the thermals
then dive down beneath the surface
returning seconds later with a catch
A sailboat drifts slowly
across the lake
We can stay here as we wish
Neither tourist or homeless
Neither herded or courted
With gratitude
We rest

There once was a woman from Kentville
Whose life was not very eventful
She risked all for a guy
Who took off like a fly
And left her to sit home resentful

Little Death

“And as to you Life I reckon you are the leavings of many deaths,

(No doubt I have died myself ten thousand times before”
Walt Whitman - Leaves of Grass

“I have died myself ten thousand times”
I cannot remember them all
I chose not to
I regret the choice
As some were spectacular, noisy, chaotic,
Worthy of memory if only as caution
for the next,
Others were lamentable,
love stories with sad endings
Stealing away , giving up the ghost
Why remember them?
Caution again
So what of this one?
Ten thousand and one?
Or THE one
No chaos, no noise, no sad endings,
no fear, no expectation, no remorse,
Lying down with a heavy sigh,
feeling the earth undulating,
feeling sated, ragged,
indolent
still

Steal the Joy

Family

“Christ the Lord is
risen today”

 2000 year old myth?
Does that bring up
the hackles?
How dare she!
Does it bring about
a head shaking in
agreement?
Reactions (to me) irrelevant
to this day
 Borrow the joy
steal the spirit
Have you forgotten
your renewals,
your little deaths
your rebirths
The day of the proposal
The day of your child’s birth
Losing a parent
Births of grandchildren
Great-grandchildren
Life’s moments when
everything changed
Experience those
joys,
those tears
Steal the spirit
of this special
day

Loons

The loons are here

Their lonely call

rises through the

morning mist

I can see them

on the lake

Efficiently fishing

one disappears

momentarily

Soon seen again a

distance away

Every year they set a

mellow pace for summer

So difficult

To follow

Cinema

They’re making a movie
It’s about her life

Opening scene
“INT
Main kitchen in
upscale restaurant
Chef pulls pan of
Yorkshire pudding from oven
Waiter appears at kitchen
door, shouts
“She ready Ed, your up”

They’re starting at the
beginning,
Her Mother’s in labour
Ed has to go

She guesses that’s a
good idea
Lay the groundwork

What’s next then
Puberty?
Marriage?
Career?

She knows
it will be the
controversial parts

Like nobody had
three marriages

Like nobody
drank

Like nobody
worked in the outback

Like nobody

was a poet

Like nobody
 maybe
watches biographies

Like maybe
nobody
does

Hunger

She’s hungry
She’s always hungry
You can tell that by  looking
Though one shouldn’t
surmise
There are drugs that make
one “fat”
(she hates the word)
Genetics even
But we digress
She’s hungry
for a good time
A dress-up
tress -up
time
It seems that
doesn’t happen
anymore
Not in her world
She misses the
compliments
They were part of
the scene
Smiles all around
dancing even
Cocktails
She’s hungry
She’s always hungry
and at the rate things
are going
she’ll most likely
starve

Endured

“Still here I carry my old delicious burdens”
Walt Whitman - Leaves of Grass

Deep within her anatomy
her past lives on
No heartbreak
 wasted
No joy
 dissipated
No illness completely
healed
Unbidden they reveal
themselves
Events rise up as from
mist
Old feelings come alive
within shoulders, belly, or
spine,
Shaken awake
Enough for tears, smiles, or
fear
Over time incidents
mellow,
become part of her
being
“old delicious burdens”
Endured

Preserved

Write me a letter

Let the cursive forms

seep into the paper

A message that lasts

forever,

or at least a decade

I've seen such letters,

preserved over time

in tin boxes

Hidden in trunks

stored in attics

There are few attics

anymore,

or storage trunks

either, if you think

about such things

Your letter will be

preserved over time

In a wooden cigar

box

for at least a decade

Caught in memory

Unobserved
