Happy Hour

Having a Guinness
thinking of him
wish he was here
and not just a whim

We'd get mellow
which a chat and a drink
he'd give me a peck
people would blink

Then with decorum
we'd continue our talk
Later on
we'd go for a walk

Over to my place
it's not very far
we'd look at the moon
and perhaps see a star

On, damn, I'm rambling
lost in my dream
my heart filled with yearnings
a familiar scheme

Other patrons are smiling
and wishing me well
curious they are
this I can tell

I return their smiles
and continue to write
they'd never guess
this non-lover's plight

Longing for someone
who won't look  my way
impatiently waiting
for some future day

When we join together
with joy and with bliss
Nothing would ever
be better than this

So I savour my Guinness
and thinks he's a fool
He doesn't know what he's missing
now  that's just plain cruel

Up in the Morning

"Up in the morning's no for me
up in the morning early"
If I'm disturbed before 'tis noon
you're sure to find me surly

I am nocturnal in my soul
don't miss the sun arising
I spend my eves with muse and pen
which isn't so surprising

I love to sit and watch the stars
the constellations shining
I lose myself in thoughts of love
for which my heart is pining

So leave me to  my late night play
no "up in the morning early"
If I'm disturbed before 'tis noon
You're sure to find me surly

An Innocuous Box

(for Terry)

An innocuous box
arrived by the post
mysteries are welcome
this one from the coast

My daughter's name
as sender on surface
an unexpected missive
what could be its purpose?

The unwrapping happened
as quick as a wink
a box of cigars
now that made me blink

What was she thinking?
I quit years ago
to start up again
would make me a schmo

I opened the box
and nestled inside
something so special
I chuckled and sighed

A sweet little bracelet
so delicate and glowing
such a surprise
my heart's overflowing

How clever she was
a twist to cause shock
to deliver Pandora
in an innocuous box

Alas

Alas! he was the one
Who came when loss had just begun
He filled the gaps with sweet refrains
Made flowers out of dead remains
We laughed and cried and sang of love
I the hand and he the glove
I sprouted wings and flew so high
There was nothing I wouldn’t try
And then one day he went away
Leaving me in disarray
I was crippled, I fell to earth,
Questioned daily what it was worth
I settled for memories as the prize
That only he could realize
Alas! he was the one
My helpless heart could not outrun.

Earth Day

"ellecee"

How sweet these moments in nature be
that give such pleasure to you and me
In the rush and energy of daily life
they allow us respite from any strife
or simply show us nature's beauty
during moments we are spared from duty

be it swan families walking in a row
a mother duck swimming with babies in tow
flowers growing by a lane
watching birds through the window pane
feeling the earth breathe under bare feet
eating wild strawberries for a treat

a special gift to have the chance
to feel sweet moments of
life's romance.

For Rodriguez

“Silver magic ships you carry”
even when you were unknown
You wrote the words that many
adopted as their own

Your story of redemption
strikes a chord, cutting deep,
Open wounds that might have festered
healed by words you would repeat

Lost but not forgotten
by those who really heard
They would search for you forever
hanging fast to every word

“Sugar man you’re the answer”
that shows life can rebound
when the message isn’t wasted
but continues to compound

Good As It Gets

It's as good as it gets
don't have sweats
so it's gonna rain
don't complain
sit by the fire
and drink champagne

It's as good as it gets
give up the frets
love  is everywhere
stop and stare
see those two kissing
is there some thing your missing?
get out there and find it
put yourself behind it

It's as good as it gets
hedge those bets
the sun will come out
then we'll all shout
and run all about
and
play in the sand
life's so grand

It's as good as it gets
dry those tears
wrap those fears
shift those gears
and
make life dance
now's your chance

It's as good as it gets
soon one forgets
so
just a few lines
like a nursery rhyme
not to heady
but get yourself ready
cause life's just fine
most of the time

It's as good as it gets
joy begets
so no regrets

Nostalgia

Nostalgia can burn
we quickly learn
when life's injustice
we discern
we long to return
to former days
when it seemed life
had much better ways
But unless we walk
in other's shoes
we really aren't armored
with any clues
as to why their life
turned out that way
and the answer to why
they've gone astray
so give the "ciggy"
if you must
say the "good evening"
which is welcome I trust
but don't take their pain
away with you
unless there's something
you know you can do
'cause each of us has
a cross to bear
and the other guy
doesn't know why it's there
Just do your best to
have compassion
and do what you can in
an ample fashion
and life will continue
the way it should
not everything needs to
be understood.

Frenetic Two

Oh frenetic two
where are you?
Flown away out
into the wilderness
of blue
T'would be such
a rich sorrow
in some distant
tomorrow
to hang once again
on such
a sweet rack
of pain.

The Last Romance

the last
romance
came by chance
the next
they say
could be far away
beyond years
beyond fears
beyond tears

maybe it’s just me
who can’t see
beyond the surface
maybe it’s just me
who can’t see
a lot of purpose
maybe it’s just me
out on a limb
with
the Brothers Grimm

not to go back
no, not that.

to go forward
with style
perhaps
 a smile
across the abyss

something
like
this
