Kneading

 

She punched a hole in the

already risen bread

Gently taking it from the bowl

She plunked it onto a floured board

and began kneading

She loved this, 

to her,

an old-fashioned ritual 

enriching her life

Kneading, kneading,

until the dough was

Smooth and elastic

Shaping it into loaves

Dropping the dough into pans,

Covering with a cloth

and allowing it to rise

yet again

Something about the process

Was healing,

brought back aged memories,

restored everything

In January, 1944

the Siege of Leningrad was lifted,

Allied troops bombed Berlin,

the first Victory ship was launched,

and so was she.

Bursted out screaming, pushed by 

haemorrhaging,

Stuck in the womb

they said,

Unable to float for the last month

they said

Swaddled immediately.

To ease the terror

they said 

Mother overwhelmed,

packed for the bleeding,

floating away,

A blessing,

they said

Mother and child survived,

they said

“However, dear,

Forever might be short,”

The length of a life?

Unpredictable 

Close guesses may suffice

for race car drivers, acrobats, 

and astronauts

A guess is still 

a guess

“Forever might be short”

Best get things done 

Plant seeds, write stories, 

 paint the woodwork,

Grow

The end of a life?

Unpredictable

Rubble

 

All gone asunder

Nothing left

except regrets 

Her best friends

have all died

Her siblings too

Her beloved pet

She is alone to

reflect on not one

but three messed

marriages

Bad choices? Or 

femininity overkill

She was beautiful,

turned heads

Now she isn’t

and heads don’t

Too much vanity?

She wasted money

She drank

Loved to gamble,

rarely won

Loved to shop,

Clothes horse

Was not debt free

until too late

for purchasing dreams

Too greedy?

Selfish?

Unfocused?

Naive?

She could go on

but doesn’t

She simply sits

Disgruntled

amidst the

rubble

of her life
