Precious Chaos

Precious chaos

Seems a contradiction
unless you have in your life
a curly-headed, black-eyed,
boy
Full of energy and smiles
while building towers
or grumpily signalling his want
for TV
He lights up our world
There are few poetic metaphors
to describe how the arrival
of this small boy
could open a great-grandmother’s
heart
An old woman
not missing anything in life
So she thought

Tales out of School

(Perth, Western Australia)

She met him in the modern way
Through poetry via satellite
their passions grew
and dreams too

She immigrated to Australia
Following her heart towards
a union of bliss
A mistake this

Their intimacy knew no bounds
Until his misogyny crept in
Her feminism crept out
Unluckily at loggerheads
too much pain
to sustain

She fled back to her old life
No, not really the same
She gave up all thought of unions
Too much despair
Don’t go there!

The final folly of her heart
   brought relief
when all was said and done
From a fool’s paradise
to peace
at a price

Deny

''
"Canst thou not minister to a mind diseas'd,
Pluck from the memory a rooted sorrow,
Raze out the written troubles of the brain,
And with some sweet oblivious antidote
Cleanse the stuff'd bosom of that perilous stuff
Which weighs upon the heart?''

She procrastinates
sits with her Ipad
meticulously crafting jigsaw puzzles

 A week's worth of dishes
pile high in the sink
dust bunnies everywhere

laundry too

The dog has to pee
OK
up for that

thank goodness

Why, why, why,
no answer

when when when
no answer

who, who, who
no answer

Celebrate?
What

This puzzle
isn't
pretty

The One

Enigmatic soul
the last remnant of trust
never given

All of love's tenderness
buried beneath
layers and layers of
cacophony.

Longings linger
bitterness melting
over time

An open mind
wishing for
a lesser loss

First poem for National Poetry Month 2018
with a  prompt from
imaginary garden with real toads
Your prompt is simple today. Let's write poems about being first, or on the subject of one--the power of one, one love, first in line, one is the loneliest number, we're number one--you got it. Go!

Awakening

Tenderness is a lie,
compassion folly,
intimacy a pretender
stealing the night
creating fantasies
dreams with rude
awakening

One day all will be lost
secrets revealed
sorrow
awakening

I don't believe her
I am beyond doubt
I know his tenderness
is true
His compassion
Our intimacies
that steal the night
our dreams
joy

awakening

Up in the Morning

"Up in the morning's no for me
up in the morning early"
If I'm disturbed before 'tis noon
you're sure to find me surly

I am nocturnal in my soul
don't miss the sun arising
I spend my eves with muse and pen
which isn't so surprising

I love to sit and watch the stars
the constellations shining
I lose myself in thoughts of love
for which my heart is pining

So leave me to  my late night play
no "up in the morning early"
If I'm disturbed before 'tis noon
You're sure to find me surly

Arrive On Time

Arrive on time

"To celebrate the waking, wake" (Rukeyser)

Don't miss the orchestra
The song
The sentence
The longing
Love unrequited
Found
Shared
Dispersed
Family
Children
Losing
Listening
Longing
The dance
The sun
The storm
The funeral
Arrive on time

Surprise

I am surprised by
the signs of aging
Looking at my hands
I see those of others
who are dead or gone
The signs of withering
the texture of old parchment
no amount of moisture cream
can take away

After

At last
The storm is spent
The thunder and lightning
subsided
I walk out
into a fine summer rain
that feels warm on my face
like tears shed
during storms of
another kind

First Life

From city to seaside
the youngest of 12
Often lost in the menagerie
Pleased when alone
Unnoticed if well behaved
brought down heavily when
not
Our Mother with to many chores
to be caught
and a father who almost lost
himself in wars
And yet
friends were fed tomato soup
and grilled cheese
Then left alone to our gossip
and giggles;
Then too
the smell of baked bread
chicken on Sunday
cream of wheat
Star fish on the beach
high tides and sand fleas
Then
follow the rule

"out of the house by 16"

No exceptions
face forward
to
life number two

Bard

"The lunatic, the lover and the poet are of imagination all compact"
A Midsummer Night's Dream - William Shakespeare

The bard of past sorrows
and magnificent words
inspires me so

A lunatic, a lover, and
a poet
a self-portrait  written
in words I could not
muster on my own

To confess the elements
of my being
rest assured
my hesitancy
is solid

If it is in imagination only
that these three are joined
then I can still hide

unidentified

Groupie

She is confused
enlighten her
pardon her conundrum.

Conceit
"a fanciful poetic image"?
or her grandios list of her
personal idioscyncrasies
Who will listen to her
or understand?
Is she an ambivalent author?
Bedding down with sages
being plugged with genius,
a poet's groupie?
Alas where does
a brooding poet go?
Forward or back?
her conundrum

Confession

My knees should be bloodied
except my confessional
lies in my mind
pictured thus:

empty
candles glowing
latticed window
open
to the other side
pen and paper

as if I would
write them down

all those
errors of omission
