A Rake

A rake is not a weapon
It smooths the way
for growth happening
It makes for neatness, order,
a good show of colour
It works heartily given the
right hands to lead it
It reveals the green
It is necessary
It moves away debris
The tender fern screams
as it passes over
The clover shivers yet
springs to life
Make no mistake green
is important
Food for thought,
Rebirth is painful
A rake is not a weapon

  2. Oh, how I love this homage to the rake! (In fact I am falling in love with everyone's Stein-inspired poems. She must have really had something.) I am particularly enamoured of your opening and closing line, and 'Rebirth is painful', which seems to come at just the right point.

  3. I’m very fond of our garden rake – for all the reasons in your poem! I enjoyed these lines very much:
    ‘The tender fern screams
    as it passes over
    The clover shivers yet
    springs to life’.
