Gazing at each other
across candlelit space
they occupy their special table
their favourite restaurant
Friday nights, an event
He picks a small box
from his jacket pocket
he opens it
her heart flutters
she blushes
He pulls out a short chain
the row of stones
sparkle in the candle light
Her refusal to show disappointment
is admirable
She aims for sweet surprise
As he fastens the bracelet around her wrist
and takes her hand in his
her heart warms
her unshed tears glisten
he takes them for joy
She will savour his gift
this night
forever
Unbetrothed

ReplyDeleteThis is quite a poignant poem, Linda!💘
ReplyDeleteOh, how bitter-sweet.
ReplyDeleteAh well, a bit of a disappointment, but at least the jewellery box is filling up!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great narrative piece. And any gift given in love has sweet intentions.
ReplyDeleteOh have I ever been there! I felt this poem all the way down.
