Watermark

An old vagrant
gone awry
Prognosis - rebel
Uncanny though,
no transgression
to report
Squatting in the firelight
from a flaming
burn barrel
A dim watermark
on a somnolent night

Voices

 I lie awake as
voices disappear
into the ether
Not a breath remains
only the memory
A dreadful torrent
of creeping insects
insidiously advancing
across my cerebral plane
I rise to rediscover anger
The dead corpses of past affairs
alter the flow of ink
from my reluctant pen
impelling evanescent magic
to live on parchment
Disinclined
to fade away

Lament

Gazing at each other
across candlelit space
they occupy their special table
their favourite restaurant
Friday nights, an event
He picks a small box
from his jacket pocket
he opens it
her heart flutters
she blushes
He pulls out a short chain
the row of stones
sparkle in the candle light
Her refusal to show disappointment
is admirable
She aims for sweet surprise
As he fastens the bracelet around her wrist
and takes her hand in his
her heart warms
her unshed tears glisten
he takes them for joy
She will savour his gift
this night
forever
Unbetrothed

Gallentry

You followed all the rules
with such finesse
The flowers given, doors opened,
drops recovered, elbow held,
kisses requested
I was overwhelmed
suspicious of such gallantry
from one who
laughed loudly at racist jokes
and kicked begging bowls

Blank Pages

I lie here
on the blank page where you left me
Alone
Useless without your fingers,
your hand,
moving me;
bringing something adequate
to life.
This living undiscerned by me
until the deed is done,
and I am alone
again,
lying
on a
blank page.

Remnant

"One can live without having survived." Carolyn Forche

Supplicating among them
unobserved
wallowing on concrete
who will see her
anyone?

Hunger eats the heart out
thirst fogs the brain
life a remnant

Scorn drips from
a hundred feet
shod in ignorance

Apathetic to pain
she drifts out
and away

leaving them behind

Transplant

She digs the hole
in fertile soil
roomy
so the roots will find space
where the earth will shield them
the sun will warm them
the rain will nourish them
She does this with care
and concentration
She knows how it feels
to be transplanted
in fallow ground

Groupie

She is confused
enlighten her
pardon her conundrum.

Conceit
"a fanciful poetic image"?
or her grandios list of her
personal idioscyncrasies
Who will listen to her
or understand?
Is she an ambivalent author?
Bedding down with sages
being plugged with genius,
a poet's groupie?
Alas where does
a brooding poet go?
Forward or back?
her conundrum

Charites

If I could speak with you
call you forward from the ether,
that I might join your circle
and speak of grace,
that you would anoint
me with it's blessings.
The grace of charm
that I would never walk alone
The grace of beauty
so that I would not offend
But more than these,
although they would assist in no
small measure in our hedonistic
world,
that you would grant me creativity,
an ability to see, to hear, to feel, to sing,
To transpose to paper
the elements of peace
bringing hope
to a world gone
fallow

Man

Always
going with the flow
acquiescent to other's needs
as if they were her own
life was good
no drama
no cold

Until suddenly
unexpectedly
swept away into
love's cannel
shocked by intimacy
surprised by pain
overwhelmed
love
learned

Now
back in the flow
acquiescent to other's needs
and
her own

Settled In

The winter has settled in
snow crunches underfoot
ice shatters to shards
mist rises from the lake
as if something warm
lie beneath
The longest night has passed
but still it feels
unending

Winter Gravestones

I am getting older

not too old
but old enough to see
memories in graveyards,
and to ponder,

someone's father who tilled the land
a youth who road a bike on country roads
a farmer's wife who raised chickens

gardens in the fall
winter snow
spring thaw
and how
some things die
while others live forever

if only in our minds

Seasonal Love

Do we come back around
like the seasons?

The rich juices of  Spring
filling our veins with
 old longings?

This time for planting seeds
available only to
ancient souls such as
ourselves.

Summer bringing the
hope of a
rich harvest
Days mellow with
expectation,
waiting
for fruition.

Fall bringing
what?
Not the promised
result?

The fruit is not
sweet enough,
the size is smaller
than desirable,

not the best colour,
not the expected
yield?

What kind of garden
have we left, how
much loss is there?

Winter coming in
with its deep chill,
cold winds blow,
the sun is low on
the horizon

No succor available
for parched egos,
Go away, go away

There is silence
The cold, cold silence
of winter creating a
pall over our
landscape.

Is it death or
hibernation?
Is it over?

 Or
merely, as always,
and to be expected,
the changing of
seasons.

Trick of Nature

Being fat is
a trick of nature
allowing you
to be invisible
in a crowd
while
taking up
the most
amount
of space

Thin Ice

There I am
unaware
the ice is thin
I have cold feet
but that's not
anything new
No sign of cracks
no warning boom
I stand alone
watching
waiting
for the inevitable
falling
into frigid water
fortunately
I have webbed feet
I know how to swim

Returning

I have run amuck
in days unladen
with inspiration
Duty called my feet
to walk in old tracks
riddled with fresh
angst
I stopped
to listen
and
there was the voice
of reason
calling me
home

One

I melt into you
or is it you into me?
No matter the geography
we are blended
our worlds
one

NaPoWriMo #13

Over indulgence
a habit to forfeit
We can't save up
sustenance
as the bears do
energy to use later
Everything stays
and sometimes grows
into great
lumps and bumps
If we stop eating
we die
slowly
but surely
lumps
intact

Entwined

Entwined
we both smile
you bite
with a gentle edge
I entangle myself
and squeeze.
My smooth
serpentine limbs
glide over your
crocodilian bony plates
slowly
slowly
in
love's
death grip

"Last Call for Sin

"Last call for sin"
grabbing courage from a can
to late to be anything
but yourself
worthless as that may
seem to be
who's gonna help
you out
when doing that would
bring them down
to late
wasted words
you're on your own
 man
your hole
you dig?
