Poetic Justice

Good Universe Next Door

It was her engagement party

Not her first

She thought it had taken

a lot of courage to say

yes a second time

His and her friends were milling

about,  drinks and snacks in hand

The talking reminding her of

a cockatiel convention

Her girlfriend’s husband patted

her finance on the back saying,

loud enough for all to hear,

“Congrats man, wouldn’t be my

choice but I’ll bet she’ll be great once

you get past the used part”

There was a noticeable moment of quiet

She felt struck, overwhelmed,  ashamed,

angry,

What right had he to be so crude and in

front of all their friends too

Bastard

She touched his arm, smiled and

addressed the room in general,

“Don’t pay him any mind, he’s just jealous

‘cause he’s erectile dysfunctional,

Aren’t you honey”

The group broke out in raucous laughter,

Retaliation was hers

Why did she feel

so crummy?

6. Poetic Justice

 Start a poem with someone

 (maybe even you) saying the

wrong thing (maybe even a terrible

thing) and let the draft deliver some

kind of poetic justice… even if it’s

imaginary.

Let the poem carry intense emotion,

like rage or shame.

Soft Kill

According to Lori Lieberman (singer / song writer)

behind this song was a story of a young female musician struggling to find the space where both her voice as well as her ideas would be respected and not expropriated whenever it best suited the purposes of the others.”

Soft Kill

You steal me bit by bit
Killing me softly like
Lieberman said
She said it best
this thing that you do
Murder is murder
Soft or not
I’m still dying
because of you
All those love words
You laid on me
All those touches
 My body yielded to
When all the time
it’s you, exploiting me
I need you, I need you,
I want you real
I give it away
So you’ll feed me
Feed me still.
