Again

She is waiting

She paces the floor

til past mail time

Nothing in the box

again

What made her think

this would be different?

This time he would write

This time he would share

This time he would want her

to know

Know he is thinking of her

Missing her

He seemed so adamant

But no

Here she goes,

 dropping, dropping

Tailspinning

into grief

Again

22. Write about what you

*don’t* know (or can’t see)

Write a poem about something

from the lens of its absence.

Going

I see the signs
every day
your favourite books
disappearing
Your soccer shoes
your skis
your winter coat
your signed photo
of  B. B. King
your vinyl
the beer mug you stole.
fromThe Nag’s Head
You think I don’t notice
such small things
mementos  of your life
Nothing of me
no match for you

Invisible

Where am I?
Buried under the lichen
on a rocky shore?
A cushion for your feet
as you contemplate
the ocean’s waves?

Perhaps a honey bee
in the roses you’ve carried
Whose  nectar I long
to taste
and my need to breath
within the roses
the scent of you

 More likely a pebble
thrown across
a glassy lake
You laughing as
it skips and slips
beneath the surface

Might I be a spirit?
Inhabiting your
golden retriever
Your stroke calming
my embittered heart

No
I’m invisible to you
No amount of metaphors
will make me real
No amount of tears will wash
indifference
away

Happy Hour

Having a Guinness
thinking of him
wish he was here
and not just a whim

We'd get mellow
which a chat and a drink
he'd give me a peck
people would blink

Then with decorum
we'd continue our talk
Later on
we'd go for a walk

Over to my place
it's not very far
we'd look at the moon
and perhaps see a star

On, damn, I'm rambling
lost in my dream
my heart filled with yearnings
a familiar scheme

Other patrons are smiling
and wishing me well
curious they are
this I can tell

I return their smiles
and continue to write
they'd never guess
this non-lover's plight

Longing for someone
who won't look  my way
impatiently waiting
for some future day

When we join together
with joy and with bliss
Nothing would ever
be better than this

So I savour my Guinness
and thinks he's a fool
He doesn't know what he's missing
now  that's just plain cruel

The One

Enigmatic soul
the last remnant of trust
never given

All of love's tenderness
buried beneath
layers and layers of
cacophony.

Longings linger
bitterness melting
over time

An open mind
wishing for
a lesser loss

First poem for National Poetry Month 2018
with a  prompt from
imaginary garden with real toads
Your prompt is simple today. Let's write poems about being first, or on the subject of one--the power of one, one love, first in line, one is the loneliest number, we're number one--you got it. Go!

An Innocuous Box

(for Terry)

An innocuous box
arrived by the post
mysteries are welcome
this one from the coast

My daughter's name
as sender on surface
an unexpected missive
what could be its purpose?

The unwrapping happened
as quick as a wink
a box of cigars
now that made me blink

What was she thinking?
I quit years ago
to start up again
would make me a schmo

I opened the box
and nestled inside
something so special
I chuckled and sighed

A sweet little bracelet
so delicate and glowing
such a surprise
my heart's overflowing

How clever she was
a twist to cause shock
to deliver Pandora
in an innocuous box

Alas

Alas! he was the one
Who came when loss had just begun
He filled the gaps with sweet refrains
Made flowers out of dead remains
We laughed and cried and sang of love
I the hand and he the glove
I sprouted wings and flew so high
There was nothing I wouldn’t try
And then one day he went away
Leaving me in disarray
I was crippled, I fell to earth,
Questioned daily what it was worth
I settled for memories as the prize
That only he could realize
Alas! he was the one
My helpless heart could not outrun.

A Missed Engagement

She:  you lied to me in September

He:   my dear I don't remember

She:  you said we would wed in spring

He:    I don't remember a thing

She:   you promised our love forever

He:    now that would be an endeavor

She:   are you mocking me now, kind Sir?

He:    no, my mind's a bit of a blur

She:   then you never meant a word

He:    I'm sorry, this is absurd

She:   then leave me now, you swine

He:    madame, the pleasure is mine

Frenetic Two

Oh frenetic two
where are you?
Flown away out
into the wilderness
of blue
T'would be such
a rich sorrow
in some distant
tomorrow
to hang once again
on such
a sweet rack
of pain.

Hello and Goodbye

From his latest discovery pad
he launches rockets
of excitement toward
a known destination
Filled to the brim with himself
he is flying toward
lost participation, regained,
lost friendship, reframed,
just for him
From her observation deck
she watches in awe and angst
seeing his rockets lighting up
the sky and filling her landscape
with a kaleidoscope of colour
not for her
In the aftermath she searches
for the answers to old questions
but there are none
she can only remain the
conscientious observer of
her own fate
she is armed against the inevitable
alone
His rockets have struck accurately
on target, and he relaxes in the
knowledge of reversed rejection
and a certain retributive justice
which flavours his day
with bright ideas
as he contemplates
the pleasures of
new alliances
he is not
alone

Wilderness

The wilderness
calls to me
the ancient
spaces
I have never
 seen

The ones I
have encountered
by accident
in the beginning,
later, by design

The smell of
burnt bush on
the desert floor

The sight of
the tundra
in spring

A moving field
of tinted grass
the colour of
gold nuggets

And I ask myself
a question
about you and I
and our
ever present
fascination
with one another

Drawn to the
wilderness
of our differences
dry as a desert,
fragrant as
arctic tundra

Opposites
yearning to be
unopposed

The Last Romance

the last
romance
came by chance
the next
they say
could be far away
beyond years
beyond fears
beyond tears

maybe it’s just me
who can’t see
beyond the surface
maybe it’s just me
who can’t see
a lot of purpose
maybe it’s just me
out on a limb
with
the Brothers Grimm

not to go back
no, not that.

to go forward
with style
perhaps
 a smile
across the abyss

something
like
this

Jigalong Song

We came
to this
place
as adventurers
and
explorers

You felt
on the edge
I felt
I had
returned
to the
womb

We
wrestled
for position
in a place
where
there need be
none

A place
of peace,
solitude,
and ever
present
silence

During quiet
periods
we sat
facing
knee to knee
hand in hand
eyes
closed

Willing
the spirits
to give us
answers
to the
unanswerable

Answers to
old
questions

Where
does love
come from?

Where
does love
 go?

What is
the sound
of loss?

Jigalong song.

An Inconvenience

She has been a nuisance woman

He could have done better with a Lab retriever,
faithful, obedient, and speechless;
unable to write letters
or call on the telephone

She, the cocoon lady,
locked herself away
from the rape of cold suitors
Filled with suspicion and disbelief
unable to open in a night

Inconvenient woman
wanting to make a mark on him
invisible to the naked eye
but felt in his heart

Wanting to emerge sometimes
through the words of a song
in a quiet office by the telephone
through the liquid warmth of a cup of tea
or thoughts of field mice in a country kitchen

a dance

anything

Nuisance woman
feeling memories
through the palms of her hands
and coming up
empty
